Morning Rain: A Prayer for the Church

Good Morning Lord, I love you!


I rose early when the playful sound of distant thunder called me to the window. I responded with joy and appreciation for this moment of beauty shared between you and me. No human hand can paint the impressionist paintings you paint of our world viewed through rain streaked windows. I am in awe, thankful to have shared this moment with YOU and captured it with the camera in my phone.You winked at me in the rain and told me to pray for the Church. 


I opened my Bible and looked for verses about rain. There are so many in both the Old and New Testament, about one hundred! With your guidance I settled my focus and meditation upon Leviticus 26:4 and Isaiah 55:10. 


Leviticus 26:4 I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit.


Isaiah 55:10  As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater.


Please Lord, Your people love you and desire to serve you in humility, beauty, truth and loving devotion. Please rain your Holy Spirit upon us Lord that we may flourish and bear much fruit to nourish our neighbors who hunger for  you. Light Your holy fire in the hearths of our hearts to make our congregations truly welcoming places for everyone. Set souls on fire to inspire them to pray for our churches, step up in service within our congregations and to reach out to the community around us in our own neighborhoods beyond the Sunday church doors, all for Your Glory.

Gratitude and Joy

It's been a rough week for me on several levels. First there was an incident at work where I was verbally bullied by a younger staff member. I didn't  handle it as well as I might have. Physically I had a lot of pain. We received some  very sad news about a member of our extended family. I was disappointed in someone I have considered a friend. That friend didn't have my back when I really needed them.  But yesterday was a really  beautiful Thursday. It was easy to put aside the gloom to identify opportunities to find moments of joy and pleasure and to find opportunities to practice gratitude. Practicing gratitude is especially important for both the caregiver and for the recipient of our care.  Gratitude requires stillness and mindfulness. Sacred Delicate Monochromatic Beauty

Briefly, the wind stilled, allowing feathery snowflakes  to pause their pirouettes from sky to earth settling gently onto the fingers of trees reaching upward in welcome. In awe I genuflect to the Creator of snowflakes and trees  a witness to the silent liturgy of delicate monochromatic beauty  and partake in the sacrament of Divine Beauty.
